
How a Vending Machine Knows Your Coin
Every day, millions of people push a coin into a vending machine without thinking about what happens next. In less than a second, the machine must decide: is this coin real, and is it the right value? It cannot see the coin, so it has to check it in other ways. Inside almost every machine there is a small device called a coin validator. This part does all the checking. It measures the coin's size and the metal it is made from, then compares the results with information stored in its memory. If everything matches, the coin is accepted. If not, it is rejected.
The first checks are simple and mechanical. As the coin drops down, it passes through a narrow gap that only lets coins of the correct diameter through. A slightly bigger or smaller coin gets stuck and falls into the return slot instead. Next, the coin passes two small sensors that measure its exact diameter and how fast it is falling. But size alone is not enough, because a clever person could make a fake coin with the same measurements. This is where the most important test happens: the machine sends a weak electromagnetic signal through the coin. Every metal reacts to this signal in a slightly different way, so the machine can tell a genuine coin from a counterfeit one, even if they look almost identical.
Modern coin validators do this electromagnetic test many times in a fraction of a second, checking the coin at different points as it falls. A tiny built-in computer compares each reading with the exact signature of every coin the machine is designed to accept. Because the process is so fast, it can also work out which country's coin has been inserted, which matters in places where several currencies are used side by side. If the signal does not match any known coin, a small electric gate pushes the coin sideways into the reject chute, and it drops out through the coin return so the customer can try again.
This hidden system explains why an old, dirty, or bent coin sometimes will not work, even though a human eye cannot see anything wrong with it. It also explains why foreign coins of a similar size are usually rejected, no matter how close the match looks. Although more people now pay with cards or phones, coin validators are still found in parking meters, laundromats, and arcades around the world. The next time a machine rejects your coin, remember that it is not being unfair. It is simply running a quick, careful test that most of us never think about.
