
Jet Lag: Resetting the Body Clock
Jet lag is often mistaken for simple exhaustion after a long flight, but the underlying cause is more specific: a mismatch between the body's internal clock and the time zone the traveler has just entered. Nearly every cell in the human body follows a circadian rhythm, a roughly 24-hour cycle that regulates when we feel alert, hungry, and sleepy. This rhythm is coordinated by a small cluster of neurons in the brain that acts like a master clock, keeping the rest of the body synchronized. When someone crosses several time zones in a matter of hours, that master clock still runs on the old schedule, while the outside world has already moved on. The result is a temporary state of disorientation between what the body expects and what the day actually looks like.
The brain's master clock resets itself mainly in response to light, which functions as the strongest signal for what time it is. Under normal conditions, sunlight each morning nudges the clock forward by a small, predictable amount, and the whole system adjusts gradually, by roughly one hour per day. Flying across multiple time zones demands a much larger shift than the clock can make in a single cycle, so the adjustment is spread over several days, during which sleep, digestion, and mood all lag behind local time. Eastward travel tends to be harder to recover from than westward travel, because advancing the clock forward runs against its natural tendency to drift slightly later each day.
Most remedies sold to tired travelers do little to address the actual mechanism. Sleeping pills can mask fatigue but do not recalibrate the internal clock, and they may even delay adjustment by discouraging exposure to daylight at the right moments. What does help is timing light exposure deliberately: seeking bright light in the early morning after an eastward flight, or in the evening after a westward one, sends the master clock a clear signal to shift in the correct direction. A small, correctly timed dose of melatonin, a hormone the brain releases naturally as darkness falls, can reinforce that signal, though taking it at the wrong hour can work against the traveler instead.
None of these strategies eliminate jet lag entirely, but together they can mitigate it substantially, cutting the recovery period from a week to two or three days. Frequent flyers who ignore light exposure and rely only on caffeine or willpower tend to stay desynchronized far longer than necessary. The most useful habit is also the simplest: as soon as the plane lands, treat sunlight, meals, and sleep as tools for telling the body which day it is now, rather than waiting passively for the old schedule to fade on its own.
